Are your golf shoes affecting your scores?

Updated: Oct 23, 2023

How do you normally select your golf shoes? Do you purchase them based on their look, function or comfort? Or do you take a stab in the dark and grab something that is on special? Either way, when purchasing your golf shoes, you should be considering a few different factors.

1. Are my shoes the right fit?

The average golfer spends at least 4 hours in their shoes each round. If you play a round every week, that is almost 9 days a year you spend in your golf shoes. So you may want to think about your purchase twice when you buy your next pair.

If your golf shoes are too tight, you may get blisters and skin irritations. If your shoes are too loose, you may lose stability in your swing. It’s important to have your shoe properly fitted by a professional.

2. Do my shoes have enough grip?

Your feet are the only things in contact with the ground when you are swinging the club. You may have heard the saying, “you can’t fire a cannon from a canoe.” This logic applies the same to golf footwear, you need a strong base of support to use the ground effectively.

Too often, I see golfers wear shoes that lack traction, which results in your feet slipping. Because you cannot use the ground optimally to create torque, you will lose club head speed. For example Joaquin Neiman’s ball speed is 172MPH with his regular trainers, but with golf shoes, his speed is 183MPH. Yes, you read that right.

3. Do my shoes compliment my foot type? Do you know if you have an arched foot or a flat foot? This will affect what shoe you should wear. If you have a high arch and your foot is rigid you should consider a shoe with more flexibility. If your foot is flat (pronated), having a solid shoe with more support would be helpful.
